For
as long as I can read, I have always read Archie Comics. The characters
were so different from other comics. While guys in my class would be reading
Superman, Batman, Wolverine and X-Men, I'd be here reading Archie. In some
ways the characters portrayed in Archie Comics are very super heroic in
their own ways. Archie would try so hard to not hurt either Betty or Veronica
where as most guys would pick one of them as a girlfriend without giving
the other one a second thought. Jughead hates girls, but remains friends
with Betty and Veronica. Betty and Veronica remain friends despite the
fact that they like the same guy. One last example of super heroism that
was presented in their recent animated series "Archie's Weird Mysteries"
involves when Betty and Veronica where both running for homecoming queen.
They both decided to withdraw so their friend who really deserved the crown
would win. To me, the human heart is stronger than any man of steele, man
of goth, or man of adamantium.
A
popular theme in the Archie series is the popular love triangle between
Archie, Betty and Veronica. Archie started dating Betty, but then Veronica
moved into Riverdale. He was taken in by her good looks and "money." he
he. Well, maybe he doesn't really care about the money.
There was even world wide commotion when it was stated that Archie would choose between the two femme fatales. What a choice. It's either the "All American Good Girl" or the "All American Rich Girl." Both girls have a lot of heart, both girls are ready to fight for their man.
I
personally would choose Betty. I have a thing for blondes I guess. Also,
she was first in line. I love you Veronica, but you're too much woman for
Archie. Of course, Archie never really decides between the two. Even in
the disastrous "Archie Return to Riverdale" TV Movie that depicts our favorite teens as adults
still has Archie trying to decide between the two. BTW: In that particular movie,
Lauren Holly plays Betty. OH YEAH!
Recently,
Archie had a new animated series called "Archie's Weird Mysteries." It
was a weird combination of Scooby Doo and X-Files, but Buffy already does that
combination perfectly well. Regardless of the lack of originality (oh yeah,
and the comics were original also?) the series was one I would always wake
up early for. All the characters were in tact and nothing changed from
the comics to the TV, despite the many monsters lurking about and how all
of a sudden Riverdale became the entrance to the Hellmouth. Oh yeah, and Veronica
was now a Vampire Slayer. He Heee!
Before
I go, let me remind you all that the Josie and the Pussycats Movie DVD
is out. I love this movie. It stars Rachel Leigh Cook and has
songs sung by the lead singer of Letters to Cleo. It's the closest thing
to a faithfull Archie Comics adaption that we'll be getting in a long time.
Rumours abound about a theatrical Archie Movie in the near future, and
since Josie and the Pussycats has done so well, and the live action Scooby
Doo movie is coming out, I'm pretty sure we'll be seeing an Archie movie
on the big screen soon.
